Exploring Eureka! The National Children’s Museum in Halifax: A Half-Term Adventure

During our February half-term getaway to Yorkshire, we made a memorable stop at Eureka! The National Children’s Museum in Halifax. Travelling with our two kids, aged 3 and 6, I was especially excited to visit—this is a place I remember fondly from my own childhood trips with my mum and sister, so I was keen to share that experience with my children.

Although Eureka! gets some questionable reviews online, my childhood connection made me want to go. Once we arrived, we had a really good time. Some of the exhibits were not working or looked a bit tired, but overall, the museum offered a fantastic day out for our family.

We stayed at Premier Inn Halifax Town Centre, which made it easy to walk down to Eureka!, adding a nice relaxed start to our day.

A World of Discovery Awaits

Eureka! is designed for children aged 0–11, offering a plethora of hands-on exhibits that encourage learning through play. The museum is divided into several themed zones, each brimming with interactive displays. Highlights include:

  • All About Me: A £2.9 million gallery exploring health, well-being, and the human body. One of the most fun features is a giant mouth where kids can clean the teeth, something I clearly remember doing myself as a child!
  • Living and Working Together: A miniature town square featuring a bank, fountain, eco street, shops, and a house. This was another highlight for me—my kids spent most of their time here, pretending to be shopkeepers, builders, and post office workers, completely absorbed in imaginative play.
  • SoundSpace: An interactive gallery where children can discover the science of sound and music.
  • SoundGarden and Desert Discovery: Areas designed to stimulate sensory exploration.
  • The Beach: Possibly the largest outdoor sandpit in the North of England, though we didn’t use this during our visit as it was too cold in February.
  • The Wonder Walk: An outdoor sensory trail.

Our children were particularly captivated by the Acousatron exhibit, a hands-on experience featuring interactive noisy toys. This ever-changing sound space allowed them to tinker, create, and make joyful noise, aligning perfectly with the museum’s mission to make learning fun.

Visiting Tips & What to Expect

We visited during the school holidays and arrived early in the day, which we always recommend. By lunchtime, it became unbearably busy, and we chose to leave, even though the kids would have happily played for much longer if it hadn’t been so crowded.

  • Opening Hours: During school holidays, Eureka! is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm.
  • Tickets: Admission is £16.95 for adults and children aged three or above. Under that age, entry is free. Tickets automatically grant an annual pass, allowing for unlimited visits within the year.
  • Facilities: The museum offers baby changing facilities, high chairs, and areas for buggies. There is also a café serving a variety of meals and snacks.
  • Parking: Parking is available nearby, with charges starting from £3.60 for three hours.

Final Thoughts

Eureka! provided an enriching and enjoyable experience for our family. Sharing a place that I loved as a child with my own kids added a special layer of nostalgia. Despite a few tired exhibits and a very busy midday, the museum’s blend of education and entertainment kept our children engaged and curious throughout our visit. Watching my children explore the mini town and play with the giant mouth exhibit reminded me of my own happy childhood visits. Overall, it’s a must-visit destination for families seeking interactive learning experiences in Yorkshire.
